Seamwork Alice long-sleeved t-shirt, v.2
Seamwork's Alice is a basic long-sleeve high-neck knit t-shirt. I have made it before, but the end result was not really a success. Largely because the fabric wasn't stretchy enough. This time I'm going to make this without any changes, with a view to wearing it as a base layer.
Last time I made a size L, this time I'm going with a size 2X (this is the intermediate period when they called XL+ the 'curvy' range, but there's only one of each size option), which meant printing and tracing another pattern.
This time I went with a fabric I knew to have enough stretch, my usual Bamboo Jersey Fabric in black, 95% Bamboo, 5% Spandex (60% crosswise and 40% lengthwise), 220 g/m2. The only other thing needed is black thread. I used a stretch needle, and the stretch/lightning stitch for everything.
During sewing I got the right and wrong sides mixed up. Again. Ended up having to unpick one armscye and both shoulders, and resew correctly. Unpicking lightning stitch, black thread on thin black fabric, is incredibly unfun. But it would only have annoyed me so I had to.
Other than that sewing it up was straight-forward. The angle in the neckband is a bit odd, a straight edge would sit better. (I put the neckband seam at the back of the neck to show that it's the back.) I didn't twin-needle the hems and neckline, favouring the single stretch/lightning stitch instead.
Fit-wise, the neck is snug, and generally too high, in that it's visible under other tops when worn layered. It only needs to be lowered/widened 1-2" to no longer be visible. The wrists are also snug, but done in the stretch stitch are still usable. The arms are about 2" too long, but seems to be an issue with the shoulders as they're out by about 2". If I wanted to add thumb-holes I'd lengthen by 1-2" (from the current length). Elsewhere it fits decently, but the extra ease around the waist is not flattering. The XL might be better here, but won't make much difference. In a fabric this lightweight it's definitely a piece for layering. So success.
