Simplicity S9857 view B loungewear bralette
Things might seem a bit more random for the next while. I've been trying to not buy more fabric, which means I'm digging into my, sometimes quite old, stash, and working on projects I've been meaning to get to for some time. Particularly underwear.
Simplicity S9857 is a knit loungewear set, with trousers, cardigan, and bralette. Knits do not lend themselves to toiles, so instead we're going with hopefully-not-too-bad first versions.
The pattern is a front and a back, self-fabric lined. With a covered elastic waistband/underbust. The straps are sandwiched between the two layers, giving a neat finish. The inner side seams are left open until the end to enable adjustment of the strap length. But I think that won't be necessary with subsequent versions, unless the fabric differs greatly.
The fabric is jersey, in black, 95% cotton 5% spandex, 225gsm. With 1"/25mm wide elastic around the underbust-band. I also used clear elastic in the straps, to give more support, but the pattern doesn't call for it. Black thread finishes out the supplies.
I started with the size XL (20-22). In the end I took -6.5cm off each strap, and my elastic was extra soft so I had to take -16.5" off the underbust-band elastic. The pattern has you stitch through the underbust-band side seams to secure the elastic. Mine curls very badly, so I added similar stitches at intervals around the band to keep some structure. Next time I could do with taking some of that excess width out of the band cover, to reduce the scrunching. The fit is fairly okay. It's very loungey. The front sides gape a bit, but not sure it's enough to go down a size. I also feel like the front isn't deep enough? But again, hesitant to over-fit. Will wear for a while longer before deciding on any changes.
