I hear you. I have recently changed shape, and am now at the same end of the sizing spectrum where the only bras available are monstrously large things, more like armour than underwear, and I'm really sick of the wires digging into my arm-pits.
Many people share your fear (and I must admit to being hesitant around industrial machines myself, they seem mean). I hope to find a couple of easy-assemble patterns, that might only require a little hand-sewing. But at the rate I'm going it'll be a fair while off yet :/
