Basting, if done inside the seam allowance, can be left there, but then the soft silk thread makes sense - it won't leave unwanted marks when ironing. I dunno, they might have it, I ever saw it, but I've never gone looking :/
She's being super-lazy, basting is a hand stitch. Just a really long straight/running stitch (A on the machine) that you snip at both ends and pulls out in one piece. Ideally.
