EMF 2020

EMFcamp should have been this weekend. But like most gatherings this year, it has been cancelled. It only happens every second year, so the next one isn't until 2022. Which feels longer away than it is.

I first attended EMF in 2014, so I can't claim to have been there in the beginning, but not far off. I took the ferry, drove, and got stuck on the M6 for nearly 8 hours. I remember the weather as generally fine but a little drizzly. This was technically my first camp, so I hadn't really known what to expect. (I had gone to OHM 2013 but barely lasted one night with the heat, humidity, sunburn, and nothing but fizzy water everywhere.) We'd brought a large yellow duck, and it raced anything with a motor it came across. I attended talks. There were bubbles, and some people dressed up with LEDs in a dance tent at night. But I never did get the badge to work right.

I returned to EMF in 2016, we flew this time, and I rented a car at the airport. The weather was really quite lovely. I wore my REPEAL jumper, and failed to refrain from mentioning Brexit more than once. I hung out a fair bit with NottingHack, who had a sweet shop, a cocktail robot, hay bales and a fire pit, and popped in to some Scottish Consulate events. I stayed up to see the sun rise. We went around and got very engaged with the projects. Many of which involved fire. Drove into town to experience the luxuries of walls, running water, and to hide from the Daystar a couple of times. The lounge was epic. The badge worked wonderfully, we spent a fair chunk learning to write apps for it. I fell in love with the whole vibe.

I found my way back in 2018, posted about my projects; Colour Stealing Underskirt and Colour Stealing+ Cyberpunk Headpiece, but didn't get around to writing about the event itself. So here goes.

We flew again, and I rented a car again. The airline, or the airport, lost my tent. Then they found it, and delivered it to the campsite without telling me, and I believe it resides in London to this day. My Anxiety was through the non-existent roof the whole weekend, but I still had a great event. We hung around our own village during the days, actually working on projects. Sometimes we'd go for a walkaround, get involved with other projects, the cart racing, popped our heads into tents when they weren't too full. Hung out at the Scottish Consulate a few times, got into a little argument with an American. I never got a badge, which I didn't mind, but I would have loved a lanyard. I took my camera out at night and managed to get a couple of photos before I discovered my memory card was full. There were wonderful things to see even just around the common areas.

But my favourite part of the whole thing was Null Sector. Shipping containers, turned into a cyberpunk village, with electronics night market, exhibition areas, and dance area. The entrance was slightly hidden, but the lasers could be seen all over camp. One of the project exhibits was a bunch of very tempting buttons, at least one of which created fireballs above everyone's heads, but close enough to feel the heat. The whole experience was otherworldly.

I think everyone who has been is missing EMFcamp about now. A deep longing in our souls. I'm going to try and focus on some project work, in tribute. Now, go lose yourself in the past talks.
