And back to underwear. Pin-Up Girls Cheryl is a knit knickers pattern that had me puzzled for quite some time. Until I realised that it's a one-piece (plus crotch piece) pattern, with a single seam, down the centre back. Light-bulb moment.
I went with view 1, high waist line, in a size 48" (hip). I cut this out in some old black stretch mesh fabric, and used clear elastic on the legs and waistline. Black cotton jersey for the crotch lining, and black thread. Lightning / stretch stitch down the centre-back, finished with overlocker / serger. Straight stitch to attach the gussets. Narrow zig-zag everywhere else.
I found the instructions a bit confusing, so I had to unpick the gussets the first time, but at least they are short seams. (The seams of the gusset are completely enclosed.) The clear elastic doesn't stretch as much as it should, and some of the stitches have popped. I also didn't get the fullness around the legs entirely correct. But they are a wearable toile. Turns out the high waist line is very high, almost to my natural waistline. Which is a wild experience in a fabric this stretchy and slippery enough to be a slip.
Well that went so well that I got a bee in my bonnet about a second version. See, it's a (mostly) one-piece pattern, and the grain of the fabric at the centre-back seam is at an angle. What would happen with a stripe?
Same view 1, size 48" (hip), but with the lower waist option this time. The fabric is a very old stretch jersey in black and grey stripes. I'm using white 1/4" elastic this time. Still using black cotton jersey for the crotch lining, and black thread. Lightning / stretch stitch, and overlocked / serged, the centre back seam. Narrow zig-zag everywhere else.
I got the fullness of the elastic around the legs better this time. The white elastic also stretches better than the clear elastic, and I haven't had any popped stitches yet. The lower waist is much better. Though I think I might bring the centre-front up a smidge next time. I suspect I'll end up making most of the other view options. But the fabric for this one was a great choice, I mean, just look at that pattern matching!
