Seamwork Chip knit jacket, v.2
2025-Oct-01, Wednesday 12:00 amWhen I made Seamwork's Chip, a moto-style cardi-jacket, last time a few things went quite wrong. So, eh, let's try again?
Sticking with a size 16 (no separate Curvy range), but this time using a dark grey melange ponte roma, 65% viscose, 30% nylon, 5% elastane, 320gsm, which is both much more stable than a boucle, and feels really very nice to the touch.
I used knit interfacing, but discovered I needed stronger non-stretch woven interfacing for along the edges that get sewn to the zipper tape, otherwise they stretch out quite a lot, which you have to unpick quite a lot. I used a 45cm separating dark brass metal zip, because I couldn't find a silvertone one. I used black thread for everything, but skipped the twin needle suggestions. All seams, and top-stitching, are lightning / narrow zig-zag stitched. Side seams and armhole edges are finished together with the overlocker / serger.
I'm very proud to say that I managed to put the zip in correctly this time! In general I don't like brass, but feel it actually works quite well with this dark grey melange. I skipped snaps, because (a) the folds will hold that position without help, and (b) I think they would subtract from the overall look. But I did do all the top-stitching this time.
I think it all came together very well. I've worn it a fair bit, and while it's not as warm as one would hope, it feels lovely and smooth against the skin. It holds its shape well, and looks smart. At least it does until it pills, if my previous ponte roma experiences are indicative. Need to figure out how to layer it with under-jumpers and over-coatings as we move towards winter.
