Seamwork's Ace pattern looks like it has a neckline fairly close to what I'm looking for. But I need to lose most of the fabric in the body. I sketched lines parallel to the shoulders seams (about 18cms) and armholes (about 10cms), similar to how you draft facings. I kept the sleeves as they were at this point.

Before I sewed up the top I cut out rectangles from the sleeves, near the top of the arm. I used interfacing on the edges, then turned over the edges, and stitched. Finished assembling the rest of the top as per instructions.

After sewing up I discovered the neck, and chest/back, are too wide for me. I wanted to avoid seams at the centre-front/back, so I trimmed a bit of width off the neck at the side seams, and created diagonal seams at the corners where the curved hem meets the straight part, to the shoulder seams. This helped maintain a sci-fi look, but on the pattern I simply removed about 2" from the centre pattern pieces at the fold. The sleeves are also a bit short for me, so must remember to add a couple of inches next time.

The pieces I took out of the sleeves are good, but don't go far enough up towards the neck. Maybe I should make up the shrug first, and remove the pieces afterwards? Or perhaps a pattern with a different sleeve would work better?
