Artistic PCB Design

2020-Aug-10, Monday 08:48 pm
I attended a workshop at HOPE called 'Artistic PCB Design for Terrified Beginners'. I enjoyed it immensely. There is a lot of information at the wiki page, and the instructional part is on youtube.

You are informed about the different layers that make up a printed circuit board, and how to leave gaps to get certain effects, like exposed copper, and holes in the copper to let light through.

The basic circuit, a four-pin SAO, two LEDs and two resistors intended to be an add-on board, template was provided.

It's a steep learning curve, having to learn to use KiCad, Inkscape, and Krita. Krita is a my new favourite graphics program. It won me over by being able to create vector layers on top of your raster layers.

I wasn't prepared and had to hurriedly find some artwork to play with to make my first board. So I found some artwork of someone I don't think would mind becoming a circuit board. Here's my first attempt using too much halftone.

Now I just have to wait for the surface mount components to arrive to complete the boards.

Entrapta Costume

2019-Oct-18, Friday 12:40 pm
Entrapta is a character from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Adorable in many ways, and described as a Maker. I had to cosplay her. But I only had two weeks to source and create the costume.

First I modified the goggles.
Then sewed up the shrug.
I created the overalls from sewing up a bib to go with some customised jeans.
I even took a stab at creating the gloves.
I got a couple of white vest tops, a lilac doll-style wig, and even some lilac face paint for my eyebrows. And then I was Entrapta.

The costume isn't perfect. Other than the smaller details mentioned in the linked posts above, the hair needs to be bigger. Much bigger. And it needs to move. But even as is the hair is very heavy, so that's an interesting problem I'm not sure how to solve.

Dyeing leather gloves

2019-Oct-18, Friday 12:40 am
The gloves were an adventure. I eventually found a promising pair of gloves roughly the right style, and in a pale enough shade that they might take a colour. These also didn't mention any waterproofing coatings, so I gave them a try.

Customising jeans

2019-Oct-17, Thursday 12:25 pm
The other half of the overalls is the trousers. I found some wide-legged white jeans, on sale, claiming to be 100% cotton. Grabbed a couple of pods of Dylon's All-in-1 machine dye in Deep Violet, and had at. It's one pod to 600g fabric. The trousers need to be three different colours so I cut the legs off just below the knees. That left about 500g of jeans to become dark purple. I put them in the machine with one and a half pods (and a pair of gloves).

Quick lilac cotton bib

2019-Oct-16, Wednesday 10:45 pm
I knew I wouldn't be able to find overalls, especially in the time, so I drafted a quick overalls bib-like pattern, that would be separate to the trousers, to be made in some lilac 100% cotton fabric.

I started with a waist measurement, and the idea of something roughly A4 in size, but with diagonal lines. It's not easy to make out but maybe you can see how I built up the pattern on squared pattern paper.

Seamwork's Ace pattern looks like it has a neckline fairly close to what I'm looking for. But I need to lose most of the fabric in the body. I sketched lines parallel to the shoulders seams (about 18cms) and armholes (about 10cms), similar to how you draft facings. I kept the sleeves as they were at this point.
