Customising jeans
2019-Oct-17, Thursday 12:25 pmThe other half of the overalls is the trousers. I found some wide-legged white jeans, on sale, claiming to be 100% cotton. Grabbed a couple of pods of Dylon's All-in-1 machine dye in Deep Violet, and had at. It's one pod to 600g fabric. The trousers need to be three different colours so I cut the legs off just below the knees. That left about 500g of jeans to become dark purple. I put them in the machine with one and a half pods (and a pair of gloves).
The fabric of the jeans took the dye as well as the packaging said, so it must have been 100% cotton. But, the thread didn't, stayed bright white, so must have been 100% polyester. At least with the bib in place most of the white thread isn't visible.
The bottom of the legs, about 200g, went in with half a pod of Deep Violet. When they came out I sewed the bottom of the legs back on to the rest of the jeans.
To get the third colour I took some of the same lilac cotton I used in the bib, and made four rectangles the width of the jeans leg, plus seam allowance. Sewed right-sides together, turned right-side out, and a double turned hem. Then sewed on to the bottom of the legs just above the jeans hem.
The darker purple isn't quite dark enough. Maybe next time I should try a little black dye as well? The lighter purple is quite close to the lilac cotton and could also be a little darker. Because the middle shade was achieved on the trousers leg fabric I had none spare to add the pockets that are the same shade to the thighs. Next time I need to try and have excess, or at least matched, fabric to add the pockets. Also, if possible the legs should be wider. But for all that, quite functional overalls.
