Butterick's 6031 is a camisole and slip pattern that is no longer available. I made this, from a kit, as part of a sew-along some time ago. But first I made a test version without all the lace. I realised, while sewing the Ruth top, that if I make a habit of more delicate tops that I'll either need to start lining them all, or make a few camisoles. So I dug out this pattern, intending to make the camisole version in basic knit, no lace.
I used the black bamboo jersey (95% bamboo, 5% spandex), 220 g/m2 weight, left over from the George + Ginger Malibu dress. But the yardage was not my friend and I had to add a centre-back seam to make this work.
To remove the lace I added 1" to the top of the Front piece. I didn't add anything extra elsewhere. But I used 1/8" elastic to the top of the cups (sewing elastic that thin is a nightmare), and twice turned to cover the elastic. I added 1/2" elastic to the top of the Back piece, and again twice turned to cover the elastic. (The two edges almost matched up, and folding the Back seam allowance forward disguises the gap.) The hem was also twice turned, but with no added elastic. I improvised straps, of 15" long (along the least stretchy direction) by 1.5" wide. I sewed them into a tube and turned right-side out. Fitting sees them too long by 2.5".
The measurements of this pattern have always been a bit strange. (I noted that while making the previous versions.) I suspect that if I cut the size it suggests in a woven on the bias it might still work. I'm also glad I bought the larger pattern size set when it was still available, because I needed it. I cut the largest size, a 22, cup size 3, which it claimed would be too small for me. But it's not. The cups are an experience. They're both very low in the front (from the twice-turned finish), and very high at the top of the points. I'm not sure what's going on there, but adjustments would be needed in future versions. The top edge (front and back) is all lettucey from my poor elastic handling. Here's hoping there's some shrinkage in the wash.
