My sample from LumiGram arrived!

Cleverly arranged (and taped) to an A4 sheet of instructions, batteries included.

It is a very delicate fabric, already unraveling, but then this sample piece doesn't incorporate the selvage. It's literally fibre-optics woven into the fabric. The grain alternates between fibre optic strands and the coloured strands of the fabric (in this case black). The cross-grain strands appear to be clear. Overall a somewhat pin-stripped effect.

Here, let me switch it on for you. Pretty twinkles! It's a soft, diffuse light, which makes it very wearable. Kind of like glitter but fixed and less variable.

Here you can see how it all works together; the battery case is connected to an LED that attaches to the ends of the fibre-optic spray, and light travels down the length of the fabric, stopping abruptly at the cut end.

But I got two colour packs, so let's try the blue!

And to show you how soft and gentle the light is, here it is in half daylight. Barely noticeable.

My first idea; try one of my auto-changing RGB LEDs with this!

This fabric is very very delicate. You can't really cut it into non-geometric shapes, can't fold it or bend it too much across the grain, or do anything to damage the fibre-optic strands. But as the LumiGram website shows, there are still plenty of things you can do with it. I'm going to try incorporating this sample into a piece of clothing. And if it goes well, maybe come up with a bigger project to do with this stuff. But it'll have to be on a body area that doesn't move too much! Still... pretty...
