Me Made May
2021-Jun-02, Wednesday 05:00 pmThis is my first year taking part in Me Made May. I pledged to wear one me-made item every day throughout May 2021. And I did pretty well, but I did not manage every day. Here is how I got on.
(First off, despite the frequency of occurrence I am not associated with Seamwork in any way. This just happens because I have a subscription with them, which means they provide me two basically-free patterns every month.)
(Secondly, that mirror is not as dirty as it looks. I do wash it regularly, but it is covered in paint and scratches that just won't go away. Though the room is, admittedly, dustier (and more pollinated) than it should be.)
Saturday, 1st.
Me Made May snuck up on me. I realised rather late in the day that May had begun, and swapped my pj bottoms for my Mel joggers (which you will see later). I did gather all my Me Mades together in one part of the wardrobe in hopes of making things easier for the rest of the month. But couldn't bring myself to take any pictures.
Sunday, 2nd.
This day I went with the World's simplest skirt (that still involves some sewing). A lovely jersey skirt that is still very easy to wear.
Monday, 3rd.
This day was another really easy option, a Seamwork Aberdeen v-neck top, in slouchy jersey.
Tuesday, 4th.
Then I went with a Kwik Sew #3496, view A; tunic in interlock jersey, that is starting to lose its shape.
Wednesday, 5th.
I did try this day, but I tried with a pair of leggings that simply don't fit any more. So I swapped them for shop-bought leggings and got on with my day.
Thursday, 6th.
Here I layered a Colette Negroni button-up shirt (that doesn't quite close over the hips), in cotton lawn. The first woven of the month.
Friday, 7th.
Then it was the turn of a Sew What! Skirts - Short and Sassy square skirt with yoke in crushed velvet.
Saturday, 8th.
Saturday was shaping up to be a lovely day and I had fun getting dressed with a Gertie Sews Vintage Casual - Easy Knit Pencil Skirt in Ponte de Roma.
Sunday, 9th.
And then the next day was very much a non-day for me. But finally you get to see the fabled Seamwork Mel joggers in sweatshirt. (And paired with a tshirt pulled off the top of the laundry pile.)
Monday, 10th.
This whole week was a challenge. But it started off with the Seamwork Skipper v.2 sweatshirt dress mod in supersoft loopback jersey for the comfort of it all.
Tuesday, 11th.
I think I had an extra early meeting this day and just couldn't think about Me Mades fast enough.
Wednesday, 12th.
Back on the comfort kick I went with a Sew What! Skirts - Got No Ties wrap skirt in a tweed.
Thursday, 13th.
So I could put in more effort, or just grab that very soft Seamwork Rio scoop-neck knit tshirt? Yeah, I totally did the second thing.
Friday, 14th.
I don't know what happened, but I think I was just out of steam and simply could not.
Saturday, 15th.
Saturday then was a late start, and I just grabbed the Seamwork Skipper v.2 sweatshirt dress mod again, and a pair of leggings. (Fun fact; The lighting is weird in this picture because there were forked lightning storms messing with the light.)
Sunday, 16th.
Okay, okay, let's get back on track with the Seamwork Julia tank top in tricot jersey, and accessories. This top is definitely a size too big, and could maybe do with having the straps shortened.
Monday, 17th.
New week! Let's do this! So a Seamwork Clarke vest top, another woven, *and* the Seamwork Skipper sweatshirt dress mod, with added zipper oversized jersey hoodie. What, two items? Yep! Fancy.
Tuesday, 18th.
Another cotton lawn shirt, a Seamwork Natalie v.2 button-up blouse layered over ... too much. This shirt does not close anymore, definitely need to size up in any future versions.
Wednesday, 19th.
This day almost didn't happen, then I realised I could almost-cheat with a New Look 6036 Vests (aka Waistcoats), in mystery woven. It's a little snug on the hips, and a bit too loose elsewhere, but still smartly pulls an outfit together. It's magic.
Thursday, 20th.
This is another day that just did not happen. Which meant Seamwork Mel joggers, and a tshirt pulled from the top of the laundry pile. A pattern emerges.
Friday, 21st.
Friday I tried out my brand new Seamwork Oliver jumper in a bubble jersey. Strictly speaking it's a size too big, and the arms could do with being lengthened a little.
Saturday, 22nd.
Saturday brought World Goth Day, and I wanted to play with outfits a little. In Me Mades I went with a Charm Patterns Rita Blouse in black crepe. I had to do a lot of customising when I made this top. But it really was worth it. It still fits great, despite being a close fitted woven.
Sunday, 23rd.
But nothing remained for the next day, so just the Seamwork Skipper sweatshirt dress mod, with added zipper hoodie with Seamwork Mel joggers again. But, yes, technically that's a whole week!
Monday, 24th.
This week is probably most characterised by trying to wear things I don't wear often. Queue the Sew What! Skirts - Singing the Blues skirt in a medium-weight cotton. But with the drawstring it is actually pretty easy to wear.
Tuesday, 25th.
Tuesday brings back the Seamwork Skipper sweatshirt dress mod, with added zipper hoodie. Yes, I'm still counting this.
Wednesday, 26th.
I mean, I could have just thrown on the hoodie again, but it just didn't seem right.
Thursday, 27th.
Time to try out Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing - Portrait Blouse in crepe again. This top still fits me, while standing. Less so when sitting. But it photographs well.
Friday, 28th.
This is another two-for, but experimental. As I grabbed the skirt with added yoke I realised I'd used the same interlock jersey to make the shrug from my Entrapta costume, the Seamwork Ace modified. I don't think it worked (and it was impossibly warm), but you can't say I didn't try.
Saturday, 29th.
Saturday brought ... oops, spoilers. I'll link the post when it goes up, but I made some Seamwork Shelly leggings in a cotton jersey. There is lots to say about fit, but, spoilers.
Sunday, 30th.
I did actually wear Me Mades, but identically to the Sunday the week before. You don't need to see that twice.
Monday, 31st.
And for the final day I grabbed my Seamwork Audrey denim jacket. It didn't last long, being much too hot that day, but I did wear it, and it still fits well.
Conclusions? Well, I wanted to take part this year because, 1) I felt I needed practice in how to dress after so long in lockdown, and 2) I wanted to force myself into some realisations. Like how jeans and t-shirts are my go to. How hoodies and joggers are my eternal fallbacks. Or how simple skirts seem to suit my body type quite well (even if I don't often feel comfortable in them). And how I almost never wear dresses.
Which all helps to inform my decisions about what to make next. I think I will leave long sleeve t-shirts, hoodies, outer wear until later in the year. But I do need to make more short sleeve t-shirts, and maybe some woven tops. The new leggings are part of a plan already in motion to work towards making my own jeans. But clearly that isn't something I should delay any longer. It's time to start preparing for next May.
